TRAINING SMART AND EFFICIENTLY, MEANS MATCHING YOUR TRAINING INTENSITY TO YOUR GOAL. There are many ways to measure exercise intensity, one of which is to use a heart rate monitor. As exercise intensity changes, so does one’s heart rate and the body’s fuel source. At low aerobic intensities (low heart rates) the primary source of fuel for the body is fat. We can maintain these low intensities for long periods of time (e.g. marathon running), without bonking or ‘hitting the wall’. In contrast, at high aerobic intensities (high heart rates), the body’s primary fuel source is carbohydrate. These intensities cannot be maintained for as long due to a limited store of accessible carbohydrate and the build-up of blood lactate (acid).
THE BLOOD LACTATE THRESHOLD TEST IS A PROCESS USED BY SPORT SCIENTISTS TO MEASURE YOUR BODY’S RESPONSE TO INCREASING EXERCISE INTENSITY. The concentration of blood lactate in your blood is correlated to your heart rate. This data can be used with any heart rate monitor to track exercise intensity, to ensure you are getting the most out of your workout whether your goal is fat loss, increased endurance, or a Boston qualifying race time.
A blood lactate threshold test is conducted using a treadmill, a CompuTrainer (bring your own bike) or a Monark stationary bike. At specified intervals the physiologist records your heart rate and blood lactate level. Heart rate is recorded using a heart rate monitor and a droplet of blood is taken from your fingertip, using a lancet (similar to a blood glucose monitor). The lactate in your blood is analyzed and used to identify your training zones, including your aerobic and anaerobic thresholds.
Blood lactate threshold testing is a specialized service, conducted only by highly skilled exercise professionals. Until recently, this advanced method of exercise physiology testing was only accessible to Olympic and professional-level athletes. The increasing availability and affordability of fingerprick blood sample analysis equipment for routine monitoring of blood lactate, has enabled Certified Exercise Physiologists to expand their services to the general public.
